8/10/09 Possible Structure Fire Griswold Elementary

Jewett City, Griswold and the Taftville FAST were requested to respond to Griswold Elementary School on Slater Ave. for a reported structure fire on Monday morning. First arriving companies made entry to the building and found a lite haze coming from one of the rooms. A light ballast fire was discovered and quickly extinguished. Mutual aid was released with thank, the Griswold FMO is investigating further.

If enthusiasm were water, the Jewett City Fire Department could have put out a string of blazes Saturday.Cheering on themselves as well as offering applause for their opponents, Jewett City repeated as winners of the Taftville Volunteer Fire Department muster for the second straight year. Jewett City finished with 38 overall points while Moosup, which was third last year, came in second with 34. Gales Ferry, competing for the first time, was third with 32.“We’re one big family,” Jewett City rescue Lt. Jim LePage said. “It’s about being fast and having good teamwork.”The family dynamic cut the other way in the form of a sibling rivalry between Jewett City’s LePage and Voluntown Capt. Emile LePage Jr. The Jewett City/Voluntown rivalry was most conspicuous during the five-event competition in which six teams participated.“We just want to beat Jewett City,” Voluntown firefighter Rob Dillon said smiling. “I don’t care if we finish fifth as long as they’re sixth.”Dillon didn’t quite get his wish. Voluntown ended up fourth overall with 22 points. Voluntown did manage to defeat Jewett City in the bucket brigade, finishing first while Jewett City was second. Yet Jewett City outdid its archrival in every other event.Gales Ferry made a strong showing in its initial Taftville muster.“We didn’t practice at all for this,” Lt. Jason Powers said after a second-place finish in the 21⁄2 hose lay. “We’re getting some great exercise and I’m really happy with how we’re doing.”Gales Ferry would have been even stronger had not firefighter Brett Eagan missed the event to care for what teammates said was a “diabetic dog.”Moosup will host a muster Sept. 12. They were feeling confident while working to get Saturday’s second-place trophy. Assistant Chief Jeff Bellavance contrasted the calm of his squad with boisterous Jewett City.“We’re the cool ones,” Bellavance said with a grin. “We can beat them.”The muster was an opportunity to boost morale within departments and cooperation among departments, said Bill Hadam, chairman of Taftville’s muster. It was also an opportunity to reflect on the harsh realities of firefighting in a relaxed atmosphere.“The job is inherently dangerous,” Hadam said. While watching several firefighters get hit in the head during the bucket brigade, he said “Now I remember why we wear helmets.”

Crews made quick work of this truck fire at Mount Pleasant and Ann St. on July 9. First due had a well involved fire with no exposures. Griswold FMO is investigating.

06/04 Taftville Station Coverage

Engine Tank 156 and Baltic Truck 124 provided coverage at the Taftville station in Norwich Thursday night while Taftville Volunteers worked to control a working fire in a three story apartment building on Hunters Ave. Yantic, Occum, Norwich, East Great Plains and the Mohegan Tribe FAST also assisted with bringing the blaze under control. One firefighter was transported to Backus Hospital for heat exhaustion.

5/15 Mutual Aid to Lisbon

Engine Tank 156 was requested to assist the Lisbon FD with a vehicle fire on Route 12 in the area of Exit 84 off ramp Sunday afternoon. ET 156 arrived and assisted Engine 154 with a quick knockdown. Station 56 was released a short time later.

5/20/08 Car verse Propane Tank, Haven Health Care

On Tuesday afternoon at 14:18 volunteers from Jewett City and Griswold Ambulance responded to Haven Health Care on Preston Rd. for a vehicle into a propane tank. Companies arrived to find a suv that had rolled from the parking lot into a stationary tank, with one occupant in the vehicle. The patient refused treatment so Griswold Ambulance was released, but command requested Griswold Fire ET-355 to the scene for water supply until the vehicle could be removed. Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately two hours. No injuries were reported.

5/17/08 Anthony St. Structure Fire

At 19:48 Jewett City, Griswold, Lisbon (ET-254) and the FAST from Taftville were requested to a structure fire across from 24 Anthony St. in Jewett City. Chief Smith (Car 56) arrived on scene shortly after with smoke showing from one window of a three story multi-family apartment building. Further investigation found a fire that was started by a candle and had spread up the wall. The fire was quickly knocked down and all companies were cleared with the exception of the Engine and Ladder from Jewett City.

5/7/08 Structure Fire North Main St.

At 04:05 Volunteers from Stations 56-55-54 and the FAST from Taftville were alerted for a structure fire at 209 North Main Street in Jewett City. First in companies found active fire showing from the basement window on the A-Side of a 2 story wood frame duplex. Firefighters stretched one 2" line to the basement while other members checked for occupants. The primary search was negative so all hands worked on containing the fire. The fire was contained within minutes, but smoke could still be scene venting from the second floor window about thirty minutes into the call. Ventilation fans were put into operation evacuating the heavy smoke condition throughout the apartment. Firefighters from Griswold and Lisbon assisted in overhaul operations. One patient was transported to Backus Hospital in Norwich for smoke inhalation and one firefighter was treated on the scene for heat exhaustion. All companies were clear and in service by 07:00. The Griswold FMO is investigating

5/5/08 MVA Main St.

Monday evening at 17:09 Engine Tank 156 and Rescue 456 responded to Main St. in front of the Post Office for a motor vehicle accident with injuries. Arriving units had a car verse motorcycle, with one serious and one minor injury. Lisbon Ambulance was requested to the scene to assist Griswold Ambulance in transporting both patients to Backus Hospital in Norwich.

5/2/08 Donation Drive

Firefighters from Jewett City spent the better half of Friday afternoon collecting donations to benefit the fire victims of the Peachtree Apartment fire in Norwich. Members went out on the yellow line around noon time and started collecting donations from "fill the boot" to cloths, food and furniture to list a few. The event was suppose to be held until 20:00 but with people still coming in members decided to stay an extra hour. At the end of the night firefighters had a total of $7,900 in cash and about $400 to $500 in change and gift cards. Two trailers were also filled with donations to be sent to the families in Norwich. A special thanks to all who participated and to Chad Johnson for pushing the idea forward.

4/26/08 Mutual Aid to Norwich

Saturday morning at 01:57 Ladder 156 was requested to assist the City of Norwich with a six alarm structure fire at the Peachtree Apartments located on West Ledge Drive. First due Norwich units encountered heavy fire emitting out of one building consisting of six apartments. The complex comprised of 120 units located in three story, wood frame buildings. Unsure if all occupants were accounted for, the main objective became search and rescue operations. The fire quickly took hold of the common roof and ran from building to building consuming almost the entire complex. Ladder 156 set up for operation on the B - C corner and put a stop to fire spread in that area. The remainder of the crew went to work with master streams operations and also contained brush fires burning in the woods close by. The ladder was able to clear from the scene around 08:00. All occupants were accounted for, approximately one hundred of the apartments were completely destroyed and most of the remainder had smoke and water damage.

Volunteers from Jewett City were alerted around 13:30 for a structure fire involving a chicken coop in the town of Sterling Wednesday. Ladder 156 was requested along with numerous Tankers from Connecticut and Rhode Island Fire Departments to responded to 1011 Plainfield Pike in the Oneco section of town. Due to the location of the fire, Ladder Companies from Jewett City and Moosup were unable to gain access to the fire so numerous handlines and master streams were put into operation. After assisting with overhaul, members of Station 56 returned about two and a half hours later.

4/20/08 Mutual Aid to Lisbon

Sunday afternoon members of Jewett City were requested mutual aid with one ET to Lisbon, Interstate 395 South between Exits 84 and 83-A for a brush fire. Units from Lisbon arrived to find about two acres involved. Firefighters from Lisbon, Jewett City and Griswold worked for about two hours containing the fire and extinguishing hot spots.

Companies were dispatched to 10 Main St., the Slater Library for a structure fire Monday afternoon. Chief Smith was first to arrive to find a smoke condition emitting from the B-Side entrance. The fire was located between the floor boards of the Basement and First floors. A water can was used to quickly extinguish the flames. Mutual Aid was cancelled while companies held the scene for smoke removal. No injuries were reported.

Mutual Aid to Plainfield 2/2/08

Saturday afternoon Jewett City was just returning from a mutual aid chimney fire when the Rescue and Engine were requested to Plainfield, Norwich Rd. in the area of Hanks for a car into a tree with entrapment. Crews from the Rescue went to work assisting Station 95 with removing one patient from the vehicle, while the ET went to set up a landing zone for Life Star at the old Jade Garden Restaurant. Due to heavy intrusion into the passenger compartment, extrication lasted for approximately one hour.

I witnessed an extraordinary event Jan. 8, that has created a new respect for the men and women of our emergency personnel. Our volunteer fire departments, AA Young and Griswold, responded to a liquid gas truck turnover off Route 138 that could have potentially caused an explosion, taking lives and property.

While as a citizen I have always respected our emergency personnel and their departments, as first selectman I was on site for nearly three hours, and saw firsthand the courage, dedication and professionalism demonstrated by our people.

To Griswold Ambulance, the State Police and all responding neighboring towns who send their emergency personnel, Griswold sincerely thanks you all.

Firefighters from Jewett City made a quick stop of a chimney fire that had extended into the residence Monday night. At 22:54 Jewett City and Griswold were dispatched for the chimney fire at 109 Lake Road, Ladder 156 was first to arrive on scene and had a 1-1/2 story residential with nothing showing. Further investigation found the fire had extended into the wall and was gaining headway. Firefighters made a quick stop with a water can and stretched a 2" line while checking for extension. Tanker 154 from Lisbon Fire was requested to the scene for additional water, but was not needed. All companies cleared a short time later. Griswold FMO is investigating.

On 01/08/08 at approximately 12:40 pm, the A.A. Young Hose & Ladder Company was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Route 138 at Exit 85, Route 395. The vehicle involved in this accident was a tractor drawn liquid propane gas tanker, hauling 9200 gallons of Liquid propane. As you might expect, an incident involving this much hazardous material had the potential of being a devastating and catastrophic event.

Resources from many area Fire Departments were summoned to this scene in order to safely and professionally handle this dangerous situation and bring this incident to a safe conclusion.

I was the incident commander of this incident and have been in the fire service for approximately 39 years. During this incident, I had the honer and privilege to work alongside some of the most dedicated professional and knowledgeable people I have ever had the opportunity to work alongside. All fire fighters who were actively involved in the handling of this incident, both career and volunteer, worked closely together as one unit, with one objective, to bring this incident to a safe conclusion.

At this time, on behalf of the A.A. Young Hose & Ladder Company, I would like to publicly thank all the men and women of all of the Fire Departments and State Agencies who came to our aid and who were directly responsible for the safely bringing this incident to a successful and safe conclusion. Departments responding with either equipment and or manpower were: Griswold Fire Dept., Lisbon Fire Dept., Voluntown Fire Dept., Plainfield Fire Dept., Preston Fire Dept., Taftville Fire Dept., Baltic Fire Dept., Canterbury Fire Dept., East Great Plain Fire Dept., United States Submarine Base Fire Dept., Mortlake Fire Dept., Conn Dept. of Environmental Protection Hazardous Materials Response Team, Connecticut State Police Troop E Montville, Conn Dept. of Transportation and the Griswold Ambulance Service.

Some pictures from January 6, around 11:30. Jewett City and Griswold Fire Departments were dispatched to the Griswold High School for smoke in the building. Companies checked the building and found a furnace problem in the basement. Smoke was evacuated and all companies returned a short time later.

Griswold may take ownership of Jewett City fire station

The leaders of the Borough of Jewett City want to turn over ownership of the fire station to the Town of Griswold.
Griswold has two fire stations; one is in Jewett City and needs work. If the town, which already owns the trucks and equipment at the station, assumes ownership of the building, it will have to maintain it for the long term.

Borough Warden Cynthia Kata said the borough has $11,000 in an account for the building, and once that's gone, there's nothing left.

The station needs the furnace fixed or replaced, an oil tank removed from the ground and blacktop resealed. Kata said the borough will make all repairs before the transfer.

"I'm not trying to pawn off my junk on them," she said.

Alan Geer, burgess from Jewett City, said the town owns the equipment and trucks, so it makes sense for it to own the building. The arrangement where the town owns the trucks while the borough owns the building was made years ago.
"We're paying to heat the building that the town's equipment is in," he said.

Selectman Steve Mikutel said the borough always has budgeted frugally and doesn't have the tax base the town has.
"They have the money to cover this issue of a new furnace, so that issue is going away," Mikutel said. "But I'm sure there are going to be other long-term issues."
He said the building is structurally sound and should not be a financial drain on the town.

First Selectman Philip Anthony said maintenance and repair costs, and the will of town residents will be the major considerations as to whether the board accepts ownership of the station.

Griswold resident Leo Bordeleau said he doesn't like the idea.

"We pay enough taxes as it is," he said. "Let the borough do it."

He said Jewett City wants to consolidate costs without giving up its government independence.
"It's like having your cake and eating it, too," he said.

To complete any transaction, the borough must call a meeting of registered voters in Jewett City to vote on whether to give the property to the town, Mikutel said.

1/8/08 Propane Tanker Rollover

On January 8, around 12:39 stations 56 and 55 were dispatched to Rt 138 and Frontage Rd. for a Oil Truck on its side. First arriving Car 256 reported a tractor trailer carrying 9,000 gallons of liquid propane on its side with one injury. Command was established and Mutual Aid was requested from DEP, Lisbon, Plainfield, Preston City, Taftville and Baltic for manpower and tankers. The Haz-Mat team from Sub Base and Canteen One were also requested. Firefighters were able to remove the patient from the Hot Zone and they were transported by Griswold Ambulance to Backus Hospital. While crews worked to contain a small leak of diesel fuel and motor oil, a perimeter was set up and residents of area homes and the American Inn Hotel were evacuated. Large diameter hose was laid by Plainfield HT-195 from the Griswold school campus to supply ET-256 at the west end of the scene, while two water supplies were laid into ET-156 from Tractor Supply store for the east end of the scene. Master streams were in operation while the truck was uplifted with the help of tow trucks from Guy's Oil out of Niantic. The trailer was towed to a commuter lot close by to be unloaded into another tank. All departments were able to clear the scene around 19:00hrs with no firefighter injuries reported.

Jewett City Fire Department would like to thank all mutual aid Fire Departments and State Agencies that responded to this incident. With out there help, this somewhat controlled situation could have had a different outcome.

Around 16:15hrs the Jewett City and Griswold Fire Departments were dispatched to 111 Main St, the Jewett City Savings Bank for a Fire Alarm. Chief Smith was first to arrive on scene with nothing showing and the building evacuated. Further investigation found a moderate smoke condition in the basement. Car 56 established Command, requested Lisbon ET-254 to the scene and the First Due Engine to stretch a line through the Ashland St. entrance. The fire was found in the Furnace room with no extension to the rest of the building. Companies remained on scene for approximately one hour. No injuries were reported and the Griswold FMO is investigating.

ET 1 made it's second trip to Lisbon in just as many days. 56 and the Taftville FAST were dispatched around 16:00hrs to Lisbon, 50 Kanahan Rd. for a Chimney Fire with Extension. After a quick knockdown by Lisbon, Mutual Aid was cancelled with the exception of ET 1 with the TIC. Crews remained on scene for a short time assisting with overhaul.

On December 12 ET 1-56, Ladder 1-56 and ET 2-56 responded Mutual Aid to Lisbon, 423 North Burnham HWY. for a Barn Fire. QV notified Lisbon Officers they were taking several calls. The crew from ET 1-56 went to work while the ET supplied Tanker 1-54. Crews remained on scene for approximately two hours.

Past Incidents Part 1

In March of 2007 Rescue 4-56 and ET 1-56 responded to the area of 223 North Main St. for a Rollover with injuries. First arriving companies found one patient still in the vehicle, needing extrication. Command requested Griswold Rescue 4-55 for additional extrication equipment. The patient was pronounced on the scene due to their injuries, Companies held for awhile assisting Connecticut State Police with their investigation.

On August 24 around 17:00hrs Rescue 4-56 and ET 1-56 responded to this minor MVA on Ashland Street. Chief Smith was first on scene and found three vehicles involved with no injuries and no hazards. Members secured all vehicles and held the scene until all vehicles were removed.
On February 28, around 18:00hrs companies responded to Lilly Pond Rd. for a MVA. Companies arrived to find on vehicle with minor damage and no patient. Mutual Aid to Griswold 11/16

Engine Tank 1-56 and Ladder 1-56 responded mutual aid to the Griswold section of town for a Structure Fire. First arriving Griswold officers had a single story ranch with fire showing from the "C" and "D" sides, adding Lisbon T-154, Voluntown ET-153 and the FAST from Taftville. Crews from ET-1 went to work stretching in the first line and sending a vent team to the roof. An aggressive interior attack helped prevent this fire from destroying the whole house. After the fire was suppressed, Station 56 companies cleared and returned to service.

Companies responded to this Car into a Building at the Griswold Senior Center located on Soule Street Tuesday. Car-256 arrived to find one vehicle with minor damage and no injuries.

Food Drive

A Food Drive was held this past weekend to benefit the Jewett City Food Bank. Firefighter Chad Johnson stopped by the Griswold Town hall last week and noticed that the shelves were almost empty. With some quick planning and dedicated members we were able to collect 1500lbs of non-perishable food items to be donated. A special thanks to all the residents of Jewett City and Griswold for your donations.

On June 22, 2007 at 19:57hrs Rescue 4-56 and Engine Tank 1-56 responded to this vehicle into a house at 172 North Main St.. Companies found no injuries on arrival. Firefighters secured the truck and turned the scene over to Connecticut State Police.

Structure Fire Soule St.

On December 20, 2006 Engine Tank 1-56, Ladder 1-56 along with Mutual Aid responded to 30-A Soule St. for a structure Fire. Engine Tank 1-56 arrived and found a three story OMD with smoke showing from the first floor "A" Side. The first line was stretched in and located a fire in a basement apartment. First in companies made a quick knockdown, returning all mutual aid with the exception of Griswold Engine Tank 3-55. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were called to 52 East Main St. on April 19, 2007 around 17:00hrs for Smoke in the Building. Car 56 arrived and had a single story wood structure with smoke showing from the "D" Side. A working fire assignment was added to the response bringing Griswold, Lisbon ET, Voluntown ET and the FAST from Taftville. Companies made a quick knockdown of a room-and-contents fire in a rear bedroom. Units cleared about an hour later with no injuries reported.

On May 5, 2007 at 21:58hrs the Jewett City and Griswold fire departments were dispatched to 47 Fairview Ave. for a structure fire. First arriving Car-256 found a two story wood structure fully involved. Mutual aid was requested from our surrounding towns for manpower and tankers.

Companies Extricate One in Rollover

On April 11, 2007 Rescue 4-56 and Engine Tank 1-56 responded to 14 Lake Rd. for a one car rollover. Car 56 took command with one patient in the vehicle. Griswold Rescue 4-55 was also requested to the scene.

MVA with Entrapment Taylor Hill
